For the 2025-2026 El Dorado TrueCare Pharmacy will be offering 2 types of Covid-19 Vaccine: mNEXSPIKE AND SPIKEVAX by Moderna.

 

mNEXSPIKE

SPIKEVAX

Target

Codes for only two parts of the spike protein; more targeted

Codes for the entire spike protein

Dose Size

A smaller, more focused dose of 10mcg

A larger dose, 50mcg for patients 12 years +

Relative Efficacy

In a clinical trial, mNEXSPIKE showed 9.3% greater relative efficacy than SPIKEVAX in adults.  This increased to 13.5% in those over 65.

The original vaccine proved highly effective in preventing severe COVID-19.

Approved Population

Primarily approved for high-risk individuals and seniors:
• Adults 65 and older
• People aged 12–64 with underlying health conditions.

Approved for a much wider population:
• Adults 65 and older
• People aged 6 months to 64 with underlying health conditions.

Side Effects

Lower rates of local adverse reactions such as pain, swelling and redness at the injection site. Systemic adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, chills and fever were comparable to SPIKEVAX

Higher rates of local adverse reactions. Systemic adverse reactions were similar to mNEXSPIKE

Underlying Conditions and Higher Risk for Severe COVID-19

For patients 12-64 you will be asked to attest to one of the following conditions.

  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic lung diseases, limited to bronchiectasis, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension
  • Chronic liver diseases, limited to cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Diabetes mellitus, type 1 and type 2
  • Disabilities, including Down syndrome (complete list included here)
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart conditions (such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies)
  • Hemophilia
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  • Mental health conditions, limited to mood disorders (including depression), schizophrenia spectrum disorders
  • Neurologic conditions, limited to dementia and Parkinson’s Disease
  • Overweight (BMI >30 )
  • Physical inactivity
  • Pregnancy or recent pregnancy
  • Primary immunodeficiencies
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Smoking, current or former
  • Solid organ or blood stem cell transplantation
  • Tuberculosis
  • Use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications
